Practice Round

Hi team,

Maybe I’m missing something, but it feels like the only way to truly learn how to use the tag system is by being on the course during a live round.

As a newer user, that creates a lot of friction. I’m trying to get comfortable with scanning tags and building the habit, but doing that in real time during a round (especially paired with strangers) makes it clunky and honestly a bit stressful.

It would be incredibly helpful to have a guided “practice round” mode within the app. Even something simple like 3 simulated holes (par 4, par 5, par 3) where the app walks you through:

  • Scanning tags correctly
  • Tracking shots step-by-step
  • Understanding how the flow works before being on-course

This would make onboarding much smoother and help users build confidence before using it in a real round.

Right now, the learning curve feels like it happens in a live game, which isn’t ideal.

I really think this would be a high-impact feature for adoption and retention.

Appreciate you taking a look.

Wolfie, this is spectacular information for a new Tags user!

Jason, there are also YouTube videos you can watch if you'd like a little more information. Love your simulation idea, I have passed this along to our Dev team to discuss!

Greetings:

    You could really just perform the test you're suggesting in your back yard. Any 'practice' round is going to put you hundred of yards away from an actual golf course (GPS-wise). What you really need to do is make scanning your clubs a part of your shot routine, and in a manner that doesn't slow play down for any group you're playing with. And most importantly, learn how to open the app, review the scorecard, make quick corrections when you mess up (you will at first).

So here are my recommendations.

A. Practice round in your backyard with scorecard and nearest course selected - more so to make sure everything's working correctly, and get accustomed to digging into the app when needed. You don't save the round of course when finished practicing:

1. Pretend you're on course making shots. Do something like I do, whereby I'm scanning my club while behind the ball making my final alignment looking at the hole. Strangers I've played with don't even know I'm scanning my club.

2. Move to the next spot in your yard, pulling out your phone and opening the app to check yardage. Of course it will be incorrect, but this is to just practice that you can awaken your phone after it being in your pocket. Just rotate progressively through all clubs on tees and fairways (to ensure there set up correctly), and your putter on greens.

3. Include inputting penalties randomly.

4. Practice adding a shot manually for when your forgot to scan. Input the club used quickly and approximate location. So you forgot your drive = 'Add tee shot', club = Driver, select the location icon, and set approximate location on the teebox.

B. Parallel run on course - still scoring manually and primarily on scorecard, and scanning clubs on course. Maybe a 9 hole round is better.

1. Again, you're really just trying to get comfortable so that scanning is apart of your routine. While marking down the score, you should be comfortable opening the app quickly after a hole and comparing. If you've forgotten to tag, don't sweat it.

2. After the round, compare the scorecard to your Golf Pad round. Fix it in app if you want to still save the round, or don't save it.

C. On course with Golf Pad only (with scorecard as backup only)

So some do's and don'ts:

- I always grab a scorecard anyway just in case something should go wrong (phone out of battery, technical difficulties);

- if you forget to tag, NEVER run back to a tee box or green to register the shot; just do as noted in 'A.4' and select the club and move the location on the map. This is likely more accurate than the phone's GPS location, as it's only accurate to within 3-5 yards either way; you can do this quickly while moving to your next shot;

- tag in advance when nothing else is happening (as long as you're not interfering with other players). Example - while another player is still teeing up a ball, I'm walking by the markers scanning, and then moving away OR in the fairway when it isn't yet my turn OR chipping on the green while someone is still away, OR marking the pin on the map manually while others are still putting.

- if I realize I've missed tagging a shot, that's fixed while I'm proceeding to my next shot, or when others are still hitting on the next hole. I never want to be holding things up for the group app-wise, and it never has.

In the end, it will become second nature. The clubs I have in my vacation home don't have tags, but I habitually make a scanning move on every shot.
