So the watch shows the distances (and tracks them) from the location of the phone, not watch. Has anyone found a workaround to use the watches gps locaiton instead of the phone? I've read that airplane mode works, but I'd like to still be able to send/receive text messages from the course.
I guess I can take my phone with me on every shot I just hate it in my pocket, might just bring a towel with me and lay it on the grass.

Hi Michael - The Golf Pad Stand Alone mode on your Apple watch is the best choice. The reason airplane mode is used is because Apple will get GPS location from the phone if it is nearby. Read more here and you may find a way to incorporate it into your routine and personal preferences. - Cindy

Thank you for the response Cindy, and that will work. I just can't be unreachable for 2 to 4 hours at a time while playing golf.
Is there really no other way to use the watch's gps location instead of phone? Without making my phone un-usable?
Make's me sort of wish I got a garmin watch or something.
